Dream It. Design It. Do It. Why Fall is the Best Time to Remodel Your Kitchen
The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your home.
It’s where meals are prepared.
It’s where family and friends meet, hang out and enjoy each other’s company.
It can be where important decisions are made.
It’s where homework gets done.
Your kitchen should be the last room you get bored of – simply because of all the activity that takes place there.
The next installment in our “Dream It. Design It. Do It.” series looks at easy ways you can fall back in love with your kitchen….again.
Get rid of the clutter
- Mail, letters and flyers
- Boxes and packaging
- Pens, pencils, books and stationery
The kitchen tends to the default dumping ground for paper and documents.
After a while, your kitchen looks more like a recycling bin instead of a place to cook.
Little wonder, then, you may be sick of it.
Let your kitchen breathe by rearranging some items which you want to keep in the kitchen (like pens and notepads by the phone) and taking away items which just don’t belong there.
It seems like a small step, but you’ll be amazed at how your kitchen will come back to life once it’s free of unnecessary clutter.
Decorate the kitchen countertops
First, you need to decide on the type of countertop you want for your kitchen:
Then, it’s time to give your countertops some personality with a few little accents:
- Large and stylish fruit bowls
- Uniquely made bread baskets
- Old-fashioned cookie jars
- Traditional jars of jam and jelly
Your kitchen will instantly be transformed from a room to cook into a warm and inviting place to create meals in no time flat.
You may want to investigate adding some decorative lighting to your kitchen countertops to add a visual focal point.
Hang a family bulletin board
In a majority of kitchens, lists, receipts and recipes gather up in disorganized piles or in clumps on the fridge or cabinets.
Bring order to chaos by installing a simple bulletin board where important notices can be easily kept and referenced.
A bulletin board in the kitchen will immediately tell everyone what’s happening with the family.
Plus, it creates a central location where everyone will know to look when they need that shopping list, business card, event listing or restaurant coupon.
Add flowers and plants to the kitchen
The kitchen is where things are created.
It shouldn’t have a sterile look or feel to it.
Flowers and plants can give easily give your kitchen a pulse.
There’s a few easy ways bring plant life into your kitchen:
- Get a vase that matches your kitchen design and fill it regularly with fresh flowers
- Find easy to care potted plants or hanging plants (like a money plant or herbs)
- If possible, install a windowbox for your kitchen
A few plants, properly placed here and there in your kitchen, will give your kitchen a natural, living look and feel to it.
