6 Bathroom Trends to Avoid this Summer
This is it.
After years of planning and saving, you’re finally going to update your bathroom this summer.
Before you get started with NuStone Transformations, check out these 6 design trends you should say bye-bye to.
1. Gigantically huge bathtubs
The days of oversized bathtubs are gone because they’re:
- Impractical
- Too big to properly fit inside your bathroom space
- Not very attractive
- Expensive and don’t deliver a decent return on investment
What many Oakville, Kitchener, and Toronto homeowners are doing is removing the bathtub altogether (if they never actually use it) and installing a sleek, modern shower instead.
Now, if you like taking baths, by all means update the bathtub.
Just don’t put one in that’s so big it dominates the bathroom.
2. White-on-white-on-white
Here’s why you should avoid an all-white bathroom:
- It looks sterile and uninviting
- White walls, floor tiles, cabinets, etc. get and look dirty much quicker than coloured elements
- Your bathroom will look much smaller than it really is
This summer, many décor experts suggest that beige or grey be the focal point of emphasis in the bathroom.
And the hot splashes of colour for summer 2018 are:
- Mint green
- Sandy pink
- Electric yellow
- Pale teal
3. Dual his-and-her sinks
For years, twin sinks were all the rage – and for good reason too:
- She gets a sink for hair and makeup
- He gets a sink for shaving and grooming
But the problem with dual sinks is that much-needed countertop space gets sacrificed.
This summer, more people consider this a bathroom trend to avoid.
Instead, they’re opting for more counter space, rather than installing a second bathroom sink.
Now, if you like your dual sinks, but still want more storage space, a simple solution is to place shelves on the walls near the sinks (if that’s possible).
4. Subway tiles
Boring subway tiles are a bathroom trend to avoid.
Taking its place will be:
- Large-sized tiles
- Mosaic backsplash designs
- Geometric shapes (think triangle, or circular tiles)
The reason subway tiles were popular was that they were considered to be a “safe choice.” They’re simple, unified, and easy-to-install.
However, that look has lost its appeal.
Instead, funky tiles are in vogue.
And the best part is you won’t have to sacrifice that sleek, steamlined appearance which comes with standard subway tiles.
5. Fully carpeted floors
While this trend hasn’t really exploded in popularity, you can still find it in a few homes here and there.
The main reason to install full carpet (as opposed to bath mats/rugs) is to enjoy the warmth and comfort they offer your feet.
Yet, the drawbacks are plenty:
- It can look incredibly outdated very quickly
- Carpeting will absorb any water – and that can lead to mold and mildew growth down the line
- Cleaning or washing is difficult and time-consuming
As a matter of fact, the International Building Code bans installing carpet in commercial buildings.
Of course, that doesn’t apply to residential bathrooms.
If you really want a warm bathroom floor, the safer and more sanitary option is to install heated floors instead.
6. Frameless mirrors
Frameless mirrors are relatively inexpensive. They’re also relatively easy to install.
On the other hand, they don’t really add any character or definition to your bathroom. And if you’ve seen one frameless mirror, you’ve probably seen them all.
Another disadvantage to frameless mirrors is that the edges are prone to chipping. Obviously, that’s because there’s no frame in place to protect the edges.
