6 Tips to Survive Your Kitchen Remodelling

Kitchen Remodelling

No matter how minor your kitchen remodelling project is, there’s always a level of chaotic inconvenience to overcome.

And with a major kitchen renovation, you can multiply that sense of disarray by about, oh, a million.

With your 30 day kitchen project from NuStone Transformations about to begin, now’s the time to plan and prepare for the temporary disruption.

1. Create a secondary, temporary kitchen

As tempting and easy it is to dine out during your kitchen transformation, after a while it becomes:

  • Boring
  • Tiresome
  • Expensive

Plus you’ll also need a spot to make school lunches, eat breakfast and have your morning cup of coffee. Especially if you’re going to need the caffeine to survive this kitchen remodelling.

If you have a secondary kitchen in your home (like in the basement), just use that. No fuss, no muss.

Otherwise you can designate a spot in your basement, spare room or garage as a short-term location for your simple cooking needs.

Kitchen Remodelling2. Keep it simple

If preparing adventurous and exciting meals on your kitchen countertops is your thing, you may have to pare that down during your renovation.

Large appliances like the food processor or mixing bowl take up plenty of space as-is.

With your kitchen temporarily turned upside-down, there’s simply no room to store these items, let alone use them.

You best bet is to put your bigger pieces of kitchen gear away until the remodel is complete.

Kitchen Remodelling3. Plan and prep with smaller appliances

When you do need to cook a meal for the family, use smaller, portable appliances.

For example:

  • Slow cooker
  • Toaster oven
  • Microwave
  • Hot plate
  • Indoor grills

As for getting any ingredients you need, you can move your kitchen fridge into your temporary kitchen as outlined in point #1.

If that isn’t an option, you can also purchase a small mini-fridge and freezer to keep those essential items nice, fresh & crisp.

4. Stock up on disposable kitchen items

Your sink, dishwasher, backsplash and cutlery drawers may be off limits while your kitchen’s being worked or while cabinet refacing is taking place.

But you’ll still need to access and use things like:

  • Plates
  • Utensils
  • Cups
  • Bowls
  • Napkins

Using recyclable or biodegradable items gives you solid, reliable, easy-to-get-to “dinnerware.”

It’s also much easier (and less stressful) to clean them up than to try to wash your good dishes in the bathtub, laundry room sink or outside with the hose.

5. Fill up your pantry with snacks

When you’re hungry but don’t have the time or energy to prepare a full meal, snacks are your best friend.

Before your kitchen renovation starts, make sure to stock up your pantry with grab-and-go items like:

  • Crackers
  • Canned fruit
  • Beef jerky
  • Snack sandwiches
  • Cereal bars
  • Mini muffins

Will they take the place of a full meal? Nope.

Will they satisfy your craving and give you that energy boost you need? Absolutely.

Be patient6. Stay patient

You may get frustrated or impatient with what seems to be an ongoing kitchen renovation or countertop installation project.

But remember the big picture here: This short term pain will give you long-term gain in a variety of ways:

  • You’ll finally get the kitchen you’ve always wanted
  • You’ll dramatically increase the value of your home
  • You’ll be able to get the most from your kitchen

One last thing: The more you use and enjoy your kitchen, the more the temporary annoyances will fade from your memory.
