Kitchen Colour Trends and Other New Home Design Trends for 2018
Let’s talk kitchen colour trends.
Happy New Year from the team at NuStone Transformations.; we certainly hope 2018 is off to a great start for you and your family.
Last year’s design trends focused on:
- Classic kitchen design ideas
- Modernizing your current bathroom décor
What’s in store for 2018?
Well, if you have your eye towards updating your current kitchen colour trends or bathroom style, here’s what’s hot and popular for this year.
For the kitchen
Gone are traditional black, white and grey for kitchen colour trends. In 2018, kitchen décor is all about going deep and being moody:
Quartz still rules
For high-end kitchen countertops, quartz will be the go-to material of choice for a variety of reasons:
- Easy to install
- Tough and long-lasting
- Incredibly easy to clean
Quartz manufacturing is now able to mimic the soft swirls or intricate veining patterns found in other materials (such as natural stone or granite).
Soft colours like grey, taupe, beige, cream, and traditional white will always be in vogue.
However, there’s a notable trend towards darker, more striking colours (as you’ll discover later on in this blog).
Kitchen colour trends: Purple walls
Purple (or violet, if you will) has always been a colour associated with regality and royalty.
And in 2018, violet will take centre stage when it comes to kitchen walls.
In addition to complimenting the ocean-theme mentioned earlier in this blog, purple/violet truly stands out and makes a statement.
In short, painting your kitchen walls purple is:
If you love experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, shouldn’t the kitchen itself reflect that?
Well, this year, it will.
Kitchen colour trends: Blue and green cabinets
However, instead of going with the same colour – or another neutral – Toronto and area homeowners are opting for crystal clear blues and greens.
And for a very creative reason, too:
Blue and green hues create an ocean-like look and feel to your kitchen.
Instead of bright whites being lit by bright lights, the kitchen will take on a more subtle, relaxed feel.
Kitchen colour trends: Dark countertops
When it comes to kitchen countertops in 2018, the darker and deeper, the better.
- Black (even onyx)
- Dark, forest green
- Brown rust
Darker countertops tend to modernize and streamline a kitchen. It provides an air of sophistication and class which traditional white countertops can’t quite match.
For the bathroom
Bathroom renovation in 2018 will be about making the most of what you have (size) by utilizing some bright and bold colour choices.
Going from cramped to comfortable
It would be nice if we had a giant, expansive, almost never-ending bathroom with enough room for things like:
- His and hers sinks and toilets
- Dual bathtubs and showers
- Tall, roomy storage cabinets
- Custom made flooring
- Drying stations for towels, bathrobes – and you
That’s not the case. In 2018, the big bathroom trend is about embracing the size you do have available (even if it’s a bit small) and making it look bigger with things like:
- Narrow, freestanding pedestal-style sinks
- Smaller bathtubs and toilets
- Wall storage
Lastly, brightly coloured floor tiles can make your bathroom appear larger than it actually is.
Bathroom colour trend: Brass and gold fixtures
For the last few years, the most popular bathroom fixture (handles, faucets, etc.) materials in areas like Kitchener have either been:
In 2018, brass and gold (the same colours your grandparents probably had) are making a powerful comeback.
Whereas silver and pewter can appear cold and distant, brass and cold has a warm, comfortable, inviting, and relaxing feel to it.
The best part is that brass and gold – when done right – will never appear dated or go out of style.
Bathroom colour trend: Go bold, everywhere
Bathroom walls are usually white or beige. Bathroom floors are usually white or beige.
And while you can’t really go wrong with those colours, this year’s bathroom colour trend goes in the completely opposite direction (kind of like the kitchen colour trends mentioned above):
That means things like:
- Gold walls
- Red floor tiles
- Blue shower walls
- Purple doors
In other words, 2018 is all about bringing the entire rainbow inside your bathroom.
Smart, closet-like storage
It would be nice if you had enough room for a walk-in closet inside our bathroom.
As it is, you have to make do with using the room we do have to store the things you need, such as:
- Toilet paper
- Dirty towel hamper
Even if your bathroom is a little short of space, that’s where those items belong.
- Hang shelves on a free, available part of the wall
- Install a new, closet like storage system under the counter
- Build a reach-in shelf directly into the shower wall (to keep shampoo and soap handy yet out-of-the-way)
