New Home Design Trends for 2017

Let’s talk design trends for 2017.

Design Trends for 2017

Firstly, everyone here at NuStone Transformations would like to wish you a very Happy New Year and all the best in 2017.

Speaking of which, will you be updating your kitchen or bathroom this year?

If so, you’re in luck.

Why? Because 2017 is full of exciting design trends homeowners from Oakville to Kitchener to Toronto are bringing into their houses.

What are they? And why are they so popular?

Read on to find out.

Kitchen design trends for 2017: Back to the classics

Last year’s hot kitchen design trends focused on grey kitchen cabinets, bright sinks and colourful mosaic backsplashes.

In 2017, the needle has shifted back towards two old fashioned colour schemes:

  • Black & white
  • Cozy, earthy wood

And instead of big, bold colours dominating the kitchen, they now take a supporting role when it comes to design.

The “tuxedo” look

When it comes to cabinet refacing, tuxedo cabinets are all the rage in 2017.

And they look exactly as the sound; black (on the bottom, underneath your countertops) and white (above the countertops).

As a result, your kitchen will have a very sleek, sophisticated, steamlined and dignified look & feel to it.

Good wood

Remember Grandma’s kitchen from back in the day:

  • Wood paneled walls
  • Natural grain cabinets
  • Hardwood floors with beautiful wood patterns

Do you remember how comfortable and warm that kitchen felt?

In 2017, many homeowners are looking to create a simple, traditional-looking kitchen which still has room for modern appliances and conveniences.

And the easiest, best way to do that is to bring country wood panels and other elements (such as breadboxes) into the kitchen wherever possible.

Small, hidden appliances

Don’t need a giant fridge? Get something smaller.

Not interested in a huge stove? Get something smaller.

Have no use for a big dishwasher? Get something smaller.

In 2017 – especially among millennials or retirees looking to maximize the room they have – going small is the next big thing.

Furthermore, “hidden appliances” are becoming increasingly popular:

  • Combination microwave and convection oven
  • 18” dishwasher
  • 60” fridge
  • Two burner cooktop

“Hidden appliances” are designed to blend seamlessly into just about any kitchen design.

And while they’re tiny, they’re powerful enough to get the job done; whether you’re cooking a nice meal or washing dishes afterwards.

Bathroom design trends for 2017: Going modern

If 2017 kitchens are all about that old-time classic look and feel, then 2017 bathrooms are trending in the opposite direction.

It’s about embracing what’s new and modern with things like:

The bathroom is fast becoming a place where people want to relax and spend more time, instead of just getting in-and-out as quickly as possible.

Quartz countertop

The beauty of quartz

Granite countertops are incredibly popular – in both the bathroom and the kitchen.

But 2017 is expected to be the year of the quartz countertop.

Especially in the bathroom.

Here’s why:

  • Quartz is incredibly tough; qualities which make it an attractive option for the bathroom
  • Quartz countertop patterns can be extremely colourful and beautiful
  • Countertops made from quartz are designed to stand the test of time

In the kitchen, quartz countertops can handle scratches, stains and heat.

The same applies in the bathroom.

If you set a hot curling iron on it, or if you happen to spill bathroom cleaner, a quartz bathroom countertop installed in just one day can take it.

Bathroom TV

Technology in the bathroom

Want to watch the news while brushing your teeth? Go for it.

Need to listen to your favourite tunes while in the shower. You got it.

Years ago, bringing in a radio or TV into the bathroom was a hassle.

You needed to find a place to set them and a place to plug them in. And you also had to worry about getting them wet or dropping them.

Not so in 2017. This year, bathroom-friendly technology can be found in things like:

  • Wireless, water-resistant speakers
  • Bluetooth-enabled mirrors
  • Easy-to-install TVs with waterproof screens

In 2017, there’s no need to miss out on anything: news, music, weather, sports or entertainment; even when you’re in the bathroom.

Enjoying life’s comforts

Thinking of redoing your bathroom in 2017?

Why not make it incredibly comfortable with things like:

  • Towel warmers
  • Heated floors
  • Motion-activated LED lights
  • Smart storage for all your items

Enjoyment (as noted in the above section about bathroom technology) is taking the place of pure function as it pertains to the bathroom.

After all, if you’re going to spend more time in the bathroom in 2017, shouldn’t it be as comfortable and relaxing as possible?
